Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, Richard Nevell (WMUK)!

-- Wikimedia Commons Welcome (talk) 16:34, 23 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Richard, I think you will agree that uploading "version 7" over the file named "Wikimedia UK Governance Review Descriptive Chronology v6" is going to result in confusion. Can you upload the new version as a new file and find someone to delete your overwriting of the original? Both should be available here. Thanks. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 22:14, 19 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Incidentally, did Compass make the changes or was this done by WMUK? Delicious carbuncle (talk) 22:14, 19 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You're right, though it seemed inevitable that either route will lead to some confusion. People have already linked to version 6, which is now out of date as Compass have made corrections. Having two versions of the same document will lead to fragmentation which I would prefer to avoid, so I replaced the older one to minimise the chance that the inaccuracies in v6 proliferate. As the original has not been deleted it is still available in the file history. If I were to upload v7 under a separate name, how would you suggest I make sure people don't use v6 by mistake? Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 11:16, 20 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Delicious carbuncle. The changes to the descriptive chronology were made by Compass after discussion with WMUK. The reason that I suggested to Richard that he upload v7 of the file over v6 was because there are many places around the web that link to the file. In my opinion it is better that those links point to the most accurate and up to date version of the chronology. I hope you would agree. As ever, I am more than happy to engage with you in conversation on this (or indeed any) topic so please do let me know if you have any further questions. Stevie Benton (WMUK) (talk) 11:34, 20 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Stevie, in some cases the most recent version is what people will want, but in other cases people will expect to get the version that was released at the time. If they download a file identified as version six, that's what they think they are getting, not version seven. I think it would be best to upload the newer version separately (perhaps as "Wikimedia UK Governance Review Descriptive Chronology" with no version number) and add a note (and link) in the description of this file. Another solution would be to rename this file and leave a redirect. The current situation is, um, less than ideal. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 13:08, 20 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The files have been renamed and a redirect left behind so that "v6" has been removed. Hopefully this should prevent confusion arising when people download version 7 expecting version 6. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 15:48, 20 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WLM in the UK[edit]

Thanks for your interest in this. I'd like to get some proper teams in place now, so we can decide who will be doing what, and I wonder if you could go to Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 in the United Kingdom/People and move your signature to the correct heading? Many thanks, MichaelMaggs (talk) 14:42, 20 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments[edit]

Hi, thank you for removing the tag of the stonehenge and the advice, and I still would like you to tag them. P.S. I'm new to wikimedia so I don't know a lot about it, if my method of leaving messages of User Talk please tell me about that. Thanks!--Ffffafsd (talk) 13:27, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No need to worry, you have got the hang of leaving messages on talk pages. I've added the right tags to your other two pictures, so that's all sorted. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 13:25, 9 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

File:Fish and chips barnstar.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

An update from Wiki Loves Monuments UK[edit]

Thank you for taking part in Wiki Loves Monuments UK
More than 300 people have contributed a total of 4,000 photos to this year's competition and we wanted to say thank you for helping us get this far. The competition runs until the end of September, and you can upload as many images as you want - so feel free to document some more sites. Or why not go through your old images to see if you have any others that could be submitted?

Since you've already submitted some pictures to the competition, you might be interested in the banner mini-contest; to take part you crop your images to a 7:1 and upload a new version. You can find out more about how to do that here. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the competition and share it with others! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 12:24, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

September 2019: it's Wiki Loves Monuments time again![edit]

Hi

You're receiving this message because you've previously contributed to the annual Wiki Loves Monuments contest in the UK. We'd be delighted if you would do so again this year and help record our local built environment for future generations.

You can find more details at the Wiki Loves Monuments UK website. Or, if you have images taken in other countries, you can check the international options. This year's contest runs until 30 September 2019.

Many thanks for your help once more! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:35, 3 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr2Commons[edit]

I have just come across a few images you have recently uploaded from Flickr. I would appreciate it if in the future, you used the Flickr2Commons tool. This tool allows images to be moved to Commons from Flickr without having to download the images to your own computer. It also brings in the largest resolution of the image, as well making sure to list the correct license and url, making it easy for the automated Flickr Review system. Also, it is fairly easy to categorize images with this tool. To use it, you just need to go to the url and authorize it (where it says "authorise first"). Elisfkc (talk) 20:20, 26 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Elisfkc, thanks for the suggestion. I'm familiar with Flickr2Commons; it's an excellent tool and I used it when possible. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 10:30, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki loves monuments U.K. 2020[edit]

Hi. Just doing some casual forward thinking about what I might take pictures of this year! But the interactive map isn’t working for me. Will it be up and running soon? Thanks, --Malcolmxl5 (talk) 06:29, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Malcolmxl5: I'm really pleased you're planning on taking part! What happened when you tried to use the interactive map? Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 13:57, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Richard. It seems leaving my comment here was just the thing needed! All is OK now, perhaps there was just a glitch across the interweb airwaves. :D --Malcolmxl5 (talk) 16:31, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Query[edit]

Do we know how many red pins are left for NHLE/CADW and Scottish buildings in the UK? I wish we had a county by county table similar to the ones that the American's NHRP project has with percentages etc! Sorry for barging in here, but I can't find a central WLM UK discussion place. No Swan So Fine (talk) 22:15, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm really looking forward to sharing my images this year - I think I have about 600 to do! No Swan So Fine (talk) 11:13, 1 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Brilliant, I hope you enjoy it! I'm really pleased we have the competition back this year - it might even spur me to take more pictures of my area and explore some areas I usually just walk past. I spotted this photo of yours of a building nearish where I used to live. I realised that I must have passed it a few times on foot or on the bus but have never gave it a second glance.
You might see me crop up on your watchlist a few times tinkering with images; we're using a new tool this year so I'm getting the hang of how it works. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 11:32, 1 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki loves monuments[edit]

I've been really irritated by this! It feels totally opaque. I can see that some of this is monumental - they don't document how they identify monuments. It's clearly using Wikidata but without saying what they are doing. I've been ploughing through some of the thousands of unprocessed images - less than 160 to go from 2022! I've written up my rant/whinge here (User:Secretlondon/Wikilovesmonuments) Secretlondon (talk) 12:25, 16 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Secretlondon, you make a lot of good points on that page. I'll take some time to respond to them properly. I take your point about it being opaque. Some of it is partly around the tool - and changes to the tool would massively reduce the amount of images that need to be processed - but I see you mentioned other issues independent of that. I could certainly have communicated better around the competition, and will endeavour to do so in future. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 18:52, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, could you possibly weigh in here, if possible? Trying to sort out what appears to be the accidental mass deletion of an organization's release. Adam Cuerden (talk) 18:23, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Adam, please excuse my slow reply but I have got round to it. As I say in that thread, the two accounts are of people who worked at the MRC. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 18:48, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

False Quality Category[edit]

Hi Richard,

I am flattered that you moved an image of mine into one of the "Quality" categories (diff).

I have never submitted this image as a Quality Image. As I suspect that the BOT you were using got over-enthusiastic, this problem might have been replicated elsewhere which is why I am contacting you rather than just removing the category myself. Martinvl (talk) 16:14, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That'll be a mistake on my part rather than a bot. I think I foxed myself by searching for Quality and Valued images at the same time. I was in the middle of searching for images of castles that have been through Commons' recognition processes, so a check on PetScan suggests that was the only error (the images of Odiham and Carisobrooke used a different template to {{QualityImage}} to denote status). Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 10:21, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Importantly, thank you for letting me know. I'll make sure to avoid that mistake in future. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 10:21, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to organise Wiki Loves Folklore 2023[edit]

Dear @Richard Nevell

Happy New Year with great tidings!! I am Joy Agyepong, the Outreach Coordinator for Wiki Loves Folklore 2023. I wish to ask if you would like to join me in an office call on these dates or times per the doodle or best feel free to let me know your availability. The 2023 edition will start on the 1st February so I will be glad if we can have a quick call within the window of 5th January to latest 15th January 2023 to discuss ways in which your community can play a role in this year's edition.

Thank you for understanding and let’s connect soon.

Wiki Loves Monuments in the UK[edit]

Hi Richard, In earlier years newly uploaded files in WLM in the UK got also added to a day category. Is this something that your team would wish in 2023 too? Thanks! Romaine (talk) 15:49, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

PS: The website https://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.uk/ still mentions the year 2022, instead of 2023. Romaine (talk) 15:57, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Romaine, thanks for checking. Yes, I think those categories would still be useful. I've now created them and the competition website mentions 2023 rather than last year. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 16:09, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Great, that is less work for me. :-)
Looking at the website I still see "Entries must be received during the month of September 2022" on the Rules page. Romaine (talk) 16:38, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've fixed that just now. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 17:57, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If there's any hotcat fixes I can do, let me know. I've just moved some of the unknown country 'GB' images to their respective countries, and I'll try and categorise any images I find. Some wonderful pictures so far! No Swan So Fine (talk) 12:25, 2 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
